In November 2025, Anthropic reported an espionage operation in which attackers tried to make Claude Code carry out much of the work of a cyberattack.

Anthropic says it first detected suspicious activity in mid-September 2025. Its investigation connected the activity to attempts against about thirty organizations, including technology companies, financial institutions and government agencies. The company assessed with high confidence that the operators were linked to the Chinese state. It reported successful compromises in a small number of cases.

The attackers supplied Claude Code with a framework that divided the intrusion into smaller jobs. Humans chose targets and reviewed a few major decisions; the agent carried out much of the intervening activity using external tools. Anthropic estimated that the system performed 80% to 90% of the campaign's operational work, a figure based on its own investigation.

Automation was imperfect. Anthropic observed Claude inventing credentials and treating publicly available information as though it had been stolen. Those mistakes limited the campaign even while the tools enabled repeated activity at a speed difficult for people to sustain.

The company says it blocked accounts associated with the activity, contacted affected parties where appropriate and coordinated with authorities. Its report covers activity visible through Anthropic's systems; the full scope of the operation and state attribution cannot be independently established from that account alone.
