Instagram is renaming its AI creator label to AI-generated profile and says accounts that fail to disclose an AI-generated person could have their reach reduced. The change was announced on August 31.

The label covers profiles whose featured person was generated or substantially created with AI. Instagram says properly labeled accounts will not face a reach penalty simply because their subject is artificial.

It does not require the same profile label for routine uses of AI, such as editing photos, polishing captions or creating graphics.

Instagram says the revision responds to complaints from people who believed they were following a real person and discovered later that the profile’s subject was generated.
