OpenAI proposed ending Cursor’s access to its models on November 12, 2026, following SpaceX’s acquisition of the coding platform. InfoWorld’s August 31 report quoted OpenAI’s notice that it intended to wind down the contract.

OpenAI said it was concerned that SpaceX would not use the technology in accordance with its terms.

For developers using OpenAI models through Cursor, the choices would include moving to another available model within Cursor or changing coding platforms. Neither option guarantees that existing prompts and agent workflows will behave the same way.

Analysts interviewed by InfoWorld said teams would need to test replacements on their own repository-level tasks, including debugging, refactoring, generating tests and making multi-file changes. A full platform move would also mean reviewing integrations, agent settings and security requirements.
