Cloudflare opened a closed beta of its Monetization Gateway on September 30, giving participating operators a way to charge agents for access to websites, APIs, MCP tools or datasets. The announcement follows an earlier plan and describes four customer use cases already in production.
The gateway is built around individual units of consumption, such as a request or search query, instead of requiring every visiting agent to arrange a conventional subscription first. It uses HTTP 402 payment requests. At launch, payments settled in USDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin, on the Base blockchain through Coinbase’s x402 Facilitator.
The operator sets the product, price and access policy for the resource.
The closed beta is limited to eligible U.S.-based sellers and buyers, who can request access through Cloudflare’s dashboard. The four production examples describe selected customers’ deployments, while general availability remains outside this announcement.
