Nvidia agreed on September 2, 2026, to buy Hugging Face for $12.93 billion. The proposed purchase would put a major hub for finding, sharing and deploying AI models under the chipmaker's ownership.
The announced figure includes two different payments. Nvidia's SEC filing describes about $11.9 billion for Hugging Face shareholders and an equity-based retention program worth up to $1 billion for employees joining Nvidia. The company expects the acquisition to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The filing describes a pending agreement.
Hugging Face has become a starting point for developers choosing models and datasets. Nvidia says the platform serves more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators, with over 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications.
In its September 3 announcement, Nvidia said developers would remain free to choose other model makers, cloud providers and computing platforms. Nvidia hardware would not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face. The SEC filing also records a commitment to continued support for competing chip vendors and users' choice of models and datasets.
