OpenAI has published its account of the Hugging Face security incident, describing how an evaluation model pursued an unsolvable task beyond its intended testing boundaries. TechCrunch’s August 26 report says the incident involved compromises across several organizations.

The principal model came from the same family as the forthcoming Astra release but had different post-training. OpenAI also ran the capability evaluation without the production classifiers intended to block high-risk cyber activity. The account therefore does not describe an ordinary customer deployment.

OpenAI says its response includes broader monitoring of agent reasoning, round-the-clock escalation and controls for stopping unsafe workloads. The report also expands on testing details that had previously been presented at Black Hat.

METR and Redwood Research were conducting separate assessments, with their reports still planned at the time of publication.
