fastCutVid is a native video cutter for macOS, Windows and Linux, built with Rust and a desktop timeline. It can import multiple source clips, split and trim them, reorder the resulting cuts and export an MP4.
The project saves those edits in a readable fastcut.timeline/v1 JSON format. A creator can make a cut in the desktop app, then give the same project file to a local coding agent. The agent can validate the edit list or call the headless renderer without opening the interface. The repository includes instructions for Claude, Codex and other local agents to work with that format.
The tool focuses on assembling clips. Effects, transitions, titles, color grading and advanced audio mixing remain outside its scope. FFmpeg and FFprobe must be installed separately for analysis and export.
Published packages cover Apple silicon and Intel Macs, Windows x86-64 and Linux x86-64. The project's README warns that Windows and Linux currently provide silent video preview, while exported MP4 files include audio. macOS has synchronized playback. The code is available under the MIT license.
