Shopify introduced Canvas on October 1, bringing its Sidekick agent into a visual store-building workspace. Merchants describe a change in chat and see the storefront update as Sidekick edits the theme’s files.
According to Shopify, the preview renders the store’s actual code. Merchants can test interactions and animations, inspect different screen sizes, and zoom into individual parts of the page. Sidekick takes screenshots of its work so it can examine the same result the merchant sees.
Sidekick could already write code and customize themes. Canvas puts those capabilities into one workspace where the whole storefront can be viewed and edited together. Merchants can still click an element and make a direct adjustment rather than sending another chat instruction.
The first version is desktop-only. It does not yet support third-party themes, app blocks and extensions, translations, markets, rollouts or theme updates.
